Garden of Joy

I have always enjoyed gardening. But, as many of my hobbies, it comes and go depending on my mood.

But, ever since the pandemic hit, I have been very much into gardening. I kept the gardens, particularly the front garden pretty much alive for over two years now, which is a real achievement for me. I enjoyed it so much because it brought a lot of benefits.

First, it taught me to be patient. I need to really understand the plant, and what it needs and consistently care for it. I don’t always succeed and many of my plants have died on me. But, there are also many who survived. Seeing your plant growth is the best thing.

It also makes me appreciate the variety of different plants.

My butterfly pea flowers just keep on giving ๐Ÿ’œ they are not just beautiful but also very useful for food coloring.
These just sprouted out of nowhere oneday
This Spanish moss is by far the most unique plant that I have. It looks like algae and has not got a distinct leave or stem. But I am telling you it grows just from water and sun!

The garden also created an ecosystem for various different creatures. Toads, snails, and chameleons are all regulars. Some birds also come and go.

It ate some of my plants but I guess that’s how they survive
Love to see and hear this ๐Ÿ getting busy hopping between my portulacas. Hope to get a new color out of it ๐Ÿ˜

Being in the garden allow me to unwind. It felt nice to be outdoor. I enjoyed using my garden as a background for photos.

While Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga in their book the Courage to be Disliked said “do not rebuke or praise” I think rejoicing and a little comment won’t hurt. The other day, when my daughter’s friends come and visit our home he said “I don’t wanna leave yet since I enjoyed it here. Your garden is so lovely” ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿ’›โค

Isnt a nice comment?

An afternoon with the girls

I spent this afternoon with the girls making our favorite Purple Yam (or is it purple sweet potatoes?) steam buns. While at it, we went into a deep conversation about schools.

It is clearly a challenge for both girls, but particularly for Ratih as a high schooler. She has to be at school by 6.30am, which means she has to wake up at 5.25ish. The lesson normally finishes at 3pm and so she will arrive back home at 4ish. Then, she needs to do her homework – and there are lots of them. She sometimes finishes very late into the night. By the time she goes to bed, she is exhausted.

There is also an issue about different subjects that she must take, about friends and teachers, and of course about grades. She has always been a serious student and she always strives to get good grades – which I think most students do. But, as it happens, the reality does not always meet her expectations.

I tried to recall my own experience when she tells this. I think I went through the same phase, but I did not feel it to be so bad. So, instead of dismissing her challenge, I tried to figure out how to help her.

I did not always have this same view. I used to take it really hard when she struggles. I feel for her and I think that I must solve her problems – which in the end is not always possible until recently when I read the book “The Courage to be Disliked” by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga.

In one of the chapters, the authors mentioned parents’ duties toward their children. Sometimes, parents unknowingly, force their desire on their children – for example, by forcing them to study, setting them to go to a certain study program, telling them to take a certain profession, and many more.

The authors are against this view. They said that parents should not force their children to study because it is not their task. They introduced the concept of “Separation of Task” which means that the task belongs to the person who will benefit from the task. We should not intrude on other people’s tasks, even if the person is our children or family. Studying is the child’s task since they will benefit from it. Forcing a child to study is intruding on the child’s task and is often caused by the parent’s own desire not to be embarrassed by their grades. They continue to say that as a parent, our task is to assist our children to do their tasks and build a trusting relationship.

When I read this, I was really taken aback. So far, I never have had serious problems with both girls. They always take their study seriously, although I may not always agree with their approach. But, I do worry that they are not happy with the process and results.

Taking the perspective of Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga, worrying would not help either. I should focus on my task to provide full support and assistance to both my girls in navigating their school years. I hope I will do a good job on this. With this in mind, my load is a little less.

โ€œFrom here on this is not my taskโ€ โ€” discard other peopleโ€™s tasks and lighten your load.

Fallen

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I’ve been dreaming of?

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I’m gettin’ old, and I need something to rely on
So, tell me when you’re gonna let me in
I’m gettin’ tired, and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute, why don’t we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So, why don’t we go

Somewhere only we know?

About 1570 steps short

Its 9:34pm and I am only 6888 out of 8460 of my daily steps target for today.

Turns out standing in front of the class for around 3 hours did not do much for steps count ๐Ÿฅบ the meeting that I had does not help the cause either.

So now I must pace around indoor to make sure I kept my streak. I am on 42 days streak!

This is one of the thing that I found after using the smart watch. It acts like my accountability partner. And I am all for the gamification ๐Ÿ˜ I enjoyed getting the badges whenever I achieved something.

Isn’t cute? ๐Ÿ˜
Okay I am bragging ๐Ÿคฃ

10.34 pm exactly one hour I managed to complete my target! Phewww its a close one ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Oh yes!

Should I Upgrade My WordPress Plan?

I started blogging in 2009 when I was about to go on my first trip to Japan. At the time, my goal was to record my journey, and I am so glad I did. My post about JICA International Center in Kitakyushu is visited by many visitors from all over the world.

I deliberately blog in English as I want to keep my non-work English writing skills. I do not have any particular topic to write about. I wrote everything but the kitchen sink ๐Ÿ™‚ From travel, badminton, baking, parenting, gardening, and random thoughts.

There are ups and downs in my blogging habit. I sometimes do not write for quite some time ๐Ÿคญ

I blogged more when after I traveled. I love posting pictures I took from different places that I visited. But posting a lot of pictures took up my free storage. So, in 2020 during the pandemic, I decided to create another blog to post about my travel experience Footprints of ME. It does not have the same traction as this blog, though, and it soon runs out of space too.

I have used 95% of my free space quota under the free plan. So now I am facing the ultimate question. Should I upgrade my plan? I do not intend to monetize this site, so I will have to put aside some budget to keep the upgraded plan. Is it worth it, though?

I guess I need to rethink what I want to do with this blog. Any thoughts?

Howl’s Moving Castle

I and the girls have always liked animation movies. We watched most Disney movies. One time, we watched Spirited Away and got blown away by its quirkiness. This is how I came to know Ghibli. The girls, being die-hard fans, have watched a lot more. But I don’t really have time to watch them.

Having visited Ghibli Museum while in Japan, I fell in love with the art and effort, they put into making the movies. So, I decided that we would try to watch every one of their movies!

Yesterday, we chose Howl’s moving castle. Like the other Ghibli movies, it is unlike any other animation movie. The storyline is so unpredictable. It has a great ensemble of characters who are very unique – my favorites are Turnip and Markl ๐Ÿ™‚

This one also has many additional bonuses.

First, it has so many beautiful sceneries. I am particularly stunned by the scene when Howl gave Sophie a gift – a door that leads to a beautiful house by the lake, surrounded by hills full of wildflowers. I often dreamed about this type of scenery…and Ghibli put my dream into a very nice visualization. Unfortunately I cant put the picture here due to copyright, but if you search you will definitely find the scene.

Second, it has so many memorable lines.

“They Say That The Best Blaze Burns The Brightest When Circumstances Are At Their Worst.”

Finally – spoiler alert! It has a very nice ending ๐Ÿ˜‰

If you love anime and have some time to spend – go and watch this one. You will love it.
